Beyond the Anchor

Reflections

"To catch the light before it fades."

Many people wait too long to ask the questions that matter.

My grandfather once told me that families often begin asking about a person’s life only after they are gone. He said it with a quiet kind of gratitude, because I had taken the time to sit with him while he was still here, listening to the stories that shaped our family. That conversation stayed with me.

Over the years, I realized how much I would give to sit down with my grandparents today and ask her the questions I never thought to ask. But time doesn’t offer do-overs. Some stories leave with the people who carried them.

This project exists because of that realization. I am writing these stories now so my children will never have to wonder who their family was or how we came to be here. I want them to know the voices, the struggles, the quiet courage, and the ordinary moments that built the lives they inherited.

Family history is more than dates on a timeline or names in a record book. It is the laughter in a kitchen, the long journeys that brought people to new shores, and the choices that echo through generations. Through my family story in The Unbreakable Anchor and the Before the Anchor series, I am preserving those moments so they do not disappear into silence.

If there is one lesson behind these pages, it is this: talk to the people who came before you while you still can. Ask the questions. Listen to the stories. The voices of our past are one of the greatest gifts we have, and once they are gone, the silence they leave behind can never truly be filled.

These stories are my way of keeping those voices alive.
